Warning signs to watch for

Problem gambling rarely announces itself. It creeps in through small shifts in habit and thinking. Watch for these patterns in yourself or someone close:

If several of these ring true, talking to a counsellor is a good next step. Gambling Help Online offers free confidential chat, phone, and email support 24 hours a day — no appointment needed, no cost, no record kept on your Medicare.

Practical tools you can use today

Bank-level gambling blocks. CommBank, Westpac, NAB, and ANZ all offer in-app gambling merchant blocks. Enable it and the bank refuses any transaction to a gambling merchant regardless of payment rail. Reversing the block has a 24-48 hour cooling-off period — this friction is intentional and helpful.

Operator self-exclusion. Every site we review lets you self-exclude directly with them for 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, 6 months, or permanently. Use it if you feel play slipping out of control.

Deposit and loss limits. Every top-ten site lets you set daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limits and loss limits. Set them low and stick with them.

Reality check reminders. Enable session time reminders in your account settings — most sites can pop up an alert every 30 or 60 minutes so you don't lose track of time.

Never gamble under stress or intoxication. The combination of alcohol, sleep deprivation, or emotional distress with pokies is where most problem gambling starts.

Supporting someone else

If you're worried about a family member or friend, the same helplines are available for you. Gambling Help Online has dedicated services for family and friends — you don't need the person with the problem to make the first call. Bring it up gently, focus on specific behaviour you've noticed rather than character, and don't lend money.
